August and September 2024 - Fifth Wheel Prep Work.

So, after Covid restrictions, dealing with a severe flare up of my CLL requiring chemo and immunotherapy, and Bonnie's trials and tribulations with her work leading to a decision for her to finally retire at the end of last year, we decided it was time to go for the shakedown cruise for our fifth wheel. It involved some interesting hassles, beginning with the refrigerator not running on electric. It did work on propane at least. I called a technician, turns out who was relatively fresh out of NRVTA technician school, but he was able to determine that the circuit board had blown a fuse and the electric heating element was no good, likely cooked at the very beginning when the electrician had miswired the 30 Amp power pole. At any rate, after parting with a good chunk of cash, the refrigerator was fixed.

Next came the electric fireplace, which was essentially a chinese space heater with LED lights shining through a foil fake flames mechanism, also which  did not work. It was easy to take out, and there were no fuses or user serviceable parts, and they did not even sell parts for this model anymore - all you could do was buy a new one for about 400.00 if you wanted one. But behind it was a nice large space much more valuable as storage, so we decided to just junk it, and I prepped the area as a storage space. We can always buy a much better, more efficient space heater if we need to.

The last thing to do was install the sidewall cameras - these allow you to see the left and right lanes and blind spots on a 7" monitor on your dash. The rear camera I installed when the RV was purchased as there is a dock already installed. The image from that is seriously blurry - 3 years of unending sun 8 - 10 hours a day fogged the internals I guess. The side cameras I had bought already, I just never installed them because you need to remove the side marker lights and replace them with the camera units, which also have marker lights.

Luckily my lights were LED, so the cameras were 1 : 1 compatible. I was able to swap out the drivers side light no worries; it is located high up on the front cab. The passenger camera was problematic - if you do the same thing the camera view is 2/3 obstracted by a closed awning arm mechanism. So I reviewed a few forums and the consensus seemed to be to install the camera at a lower marker light behind the door - about half way down the sidewall but at least you could see the entire lane.

Both cameras installed no issues, paired with the truck module and we are good to go, except for the rear camera being cloudy. I'll replace that one, and from then on begin removing them in between trips to protect the lenses.
