Chronicling Our Journey in Our RV & With Each Other
Sep. 15 - 20, 2024: Door County Peninsula, Wisconsin, RV Trip
Tuesday Sep. 17 - Door Peninsula Winery & Sister Bay
We decided to check out some of the local wineries and started with Door Peninsula Winery in Sturgeon Bay, WI. They were the highest rated and offered a winery tour as well as a free tasting bar. We arrived too late for the on the hour tour, but went to the tasting bar. They had a decent Pinot Grigio, but they specialized in very sweet fruit wines like Blood Orange and mead made from honey, as well as campy joke wines ("Hallo-wine" - seriously?) We bought a couple of Pinot's.
Did the tour, no one else came so we got a private one. The original building was a school house until the 1960's, and the new owners converted it to local wine making in 1984. They moved to distilling as well in 2000. Not too shabby, but it was not Napa with the 20 foot barrels and such.
After the winery tour, we headed back and stopped in Sister Bay. Large marina town, lots of yachts and large sailboats. Had a cool scandinavian themed place which had a restautant named Skäl, and a biergarten with more than 20 draft craft beers on tap named Stabbur. Had roofs on the buildings that all had mature grass on them, and goat motifs everywhere. We would find out later what that was all about.
